How to Prepare Your Home for Fall Allergies
Most people think that allergies only rear their ugly heads in spring and summer, and while they’re more common in those seasons, they don’t just magically go away when the weather gets a bit cooler.
If you don’t want to spend every day with itchy eyes and a runny nose, it’s important to prepare your home for fall allergies.
You may think that dusting will clean your home, but if you’re using a standard feather duster, all you’re doing is spreading the dust around. Instead, use a cleaning spray and microfiber cloth that captures the dust.
Clean Your Drapes
Curtains and drapes are breeding grounds for dust and allergens, so have them cleaned regularly to avoid breathing in those particles.
Use Vacuums with HEPA Filters
Since carpets do a great job of hoarding allergens, such as mold spores, pollen, and dust, it’s important to vacuum them often. Just make sure you’re using a vacuum with a HEPA filter so you’re sucking up and filtering out as many allergens as possible.
Wash or Replace Your Bedding
Your mattress and bed sheets can harbor dust mites that can really irritate your allergies. Besides vacuuming your mattress and washing your sheets weekly, consider whether or not you should upgrade your sheets. Certain kinds of bedding are hypoallergenic or can create a barrier between your mattress and dust mites.
Keep Your Windows Closed
While it’s good to crack your windows every now and then to better ventilate your home and let in fresh air, that air brings pollen and other allergens along with it. If you’re very prone to allergies, it’s best to keep your windows closed to block out allergens.
Invest in an Air Purifier
If you need a little more helping fighting fall allergies in your home, an air purifier is the way to go. These units can remove up to 99% of irritating particles from your home’s air and keep it free of allergens.
