Signs Your Sewer Line is Clogged

Signs Your Sewer Line is Clogged

When you discover your toilet is clogged, your first instinct is probably to reach for a plunger and hope for the best. But what may seem like a simple toilet clog can actually be caused by something much bigger. Sometimes, the problem lies within your sewer line.

In order to know if that’s the case, you need to be able to recognize the signs that your sewer line is clogged.

Several Drains are Backed Up

It’s one thing when a single toilet in your home is clogged, but if a toilet, two sinks, and a shower are all backing up, you likely have a sewer line clog on your hands. When the main sewer line doesn’t allow water and waste to flow through it easily, the water will be forced back through your plumbing system and flow into other available drains.

Even if you don’t see water back up into your drains, you may be able to tell that you have multiple drains backed up if you hear air hissing as water goes down them — that’s the sound of the water trying to get past a blockage.

Water Flows Into Other Fixtures

If you turn on your bathroom faucet and see the water in your toilet bowl start to rise or if water pools in your shower when you flush your toilet, you may have a clogged sewer line.

Pro Tip: If you’re testing this, always look at the fixture that has the lowest drain point, since this is where the water will go first.

There’s an Awful Sewage Smell

Bathrooms aren’t always known for smelling the best, but there’s a difference between typical bad bathroom odors and actual sewage smells. Since water and waste won’t be able to leave your plumbing system if the sewer line is clogged, they’ll simply sit in your pipes, and that smell will radiate back into your home.
