Keeping Your Home Warm and Your Energy Bills Low

Keeping Your Home Warm and Your Energy Bills Low

With the temperatures outside continuing to drop, you may be tempted to crank up your heat in order to stay comfortable in your home. But all that’s going to do in strain your heating system and seriously increase your energy bills.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to keep your home warm and your energy bills lows.

Wear Warm Clothing

This may seem self-explanatory, but how often do you hear your kids complain that the house is cold while they’re walking around barefoot and in shorts? When you’re hanging out at home, wear sweatpants, sweatshirts, and warm socks. Putting on or taking off one layer of clothing won’t affect your energy bill, but messing with your thermostat will.

Seal Up Any and All Cracks

Do you ever walk by a window or door and feel a breeze of cold air? That means there’s a spot where warm air is escaping your home and cold air is coming in — and that your HVAC system is working harder to keep a steady temperature. Use caulk or weatherstripping around your windows and doors to put a stop to air leaks.

Use Your Ceiling Fans

Contrary to popular belief, fans don’t change air’s temperature — they just move the air around. Set your home’s ceiling fans to spin clockwise so they push warm air back down. This not only keeps you comfortable but it can take some of the pressure off your heating system.

Utilize Your Curtains

Some curtains can actually act as insulation and help prevent heat from escaping your home through your windows, so swap out thin ones for thicker ones. You should also open the curtains when the sun is shining on that side of your home so you get a little natural warmth that way.
