Need an Electrician? The Warning Signs

There are some home jobs that are important to be left to a professional. One of the most important is electrical work. If you attempt to fix things on your own, you run the risk of not only messing up the electrical in the house, but also potentially injuring yourself. If you’re not sure about your electrical and whether or not there are problems, you should recognize some of the warning signs that would indicate there is an issue with the electrical wiring.

Dimming or Flickering Lights

If there is an issue with light fixtures, it could mean there is a bigger issue because these fixtures do not draw a lot of power and problems rarely involve the fixture itself. Do you notice the lights dimming or flickering when appliances turn on? Is there a random moment of flickering whenever the lights are on? Have a professional come out and take a look. This is also common when an air conditioner or heater kicks on.

Hot Outlets or Switch Plates

Regardless of the function of the item that’s plugged in, if the outlet or switch plate is hot, it could mean there is a problem with the electric current. A slight warmth isn’t an issue, but when it becomes uncomfortably hot, you should probably turn off the item and try another outlet. A hot outlet may be a sign of incorrect wiring.

Frequent Blown Fuses

When a fuse blows or a circuit breakers fails, it means that the electrical in the home is preventing an overload. When an item trips a breaker, the appliance may be the reason for the outage. However, if there is a blown fuse every time you use a specific outlet, the problem may be the wiring and the circuit may be overloaded.

Sparking

No matter the location of the electrical wiring, sparking is never a good sign and you should definitely deal with it accordingly. Depending on the location of the sparks, an electrician may come out and check out the circuit breaker or fuse box. Some sparks may come from an appliance directly which may require the help of an appliance repair company. Outlets, circuit breakers, or fuse boxes require expert electricians.
