Plumbing Emergency: What You Can Do While Waiting
Any time you encounter a plumbing emergency, the first thing that goes through your mind is to call an expert plumber to come out and fix the issue. That’s perfectly fine, but what do you do while you’re waiting? Far too often, people feel helpless during this time and the problem worsens, causing even more panic. While you wait for a plumber to arrive, make sure you’re taking actions to help the situation.
Turn Off the Water
In the event you have water backing up and overflowing causing flooding in your home, make sure you act quickly to turn off the source of water. Doing so can limit the amount of water entering the home and make for less of a mess. It can also prevent water damage from occurring so you’re not dealing with even more issues later.
Treat the Leak
When a visible pipe bursts, there are a few things you can do to help alleviate the situation temporarily while you wait for a plumber. If you have a sturdy tape, try to cover the leak as much as possible. You can also put a bucket under the leak to catch the drips as much as possible. Putting towels down can also help keep the water from spreading to other parts of the home.
Clear Any Dangers
When water begins to flood, you definitely want to clear any electrical components nearby that may cause a shock. If the water is reaching an outlet, turn the electricity off completely so there are no issues.
Note All Past Problems
If this is an issue you have been having for a while, note any past plumbing problems that you may have had. In some situations, the problem may be a direct result of a deeper underlying issue that you’ve experienced before. Let the plumber know of any and all issues to ensure they are providing the right fix.
