5 Common Air Conditioner Problems

Sometimes, your air conditioning system gives you warning signs before shutting down. Let’s take a look at air conditioner malfunctions that indicate it’s time to contact an HVAC technician.

1. Refrigerant Leaks
The refrigerant is the liquid in your system that eliminates the heat and humidity from your home’s air. When leaks form in your refrigerant lines, this drains out the fluid, making your AC system unable to cool your home effectively. For refrigerant leakage, a specialized technician will need to detect the leaks and repair the lines.

2. Frozen Evaporator Coil
An evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air and is filled with refrigerant to help cool the home. Though it may sound impractical, evaporator coils need warm air to function correctly. If something hinders the airflow, the coils can get too cold, which forms a layer of ice on the outside. This prevents cold air from coming out of your AC supply registers.

3. Clogged Drains
Your AC system’s drains are significant to the functionality of your air. When your unit cools your home, it removes moisture from the air through a drain line. This moisture then goes into a pan, and eventually down the drain. If any of these components get clogged, this can damage your system or permit water leaks that, if not detected, destroy your ceiling, walls, or furnishing. Even worse, you could develop mold growth.

4. Fan Malfunction
Your AC system has a fan that blows indoor air over the evaporator coils to cool your home. There’s also another fan that blows over the outdoor unit’s condenser to eject absorbed heat to the outdoors. If either one of these fans breaks, this could cause severe problems to your AC unit. A broken fan can be the cause of many issues: lack of lubrication, a faulty motor, debris clogging the fan, or a worn belt. To accurately determine the problem, speak with an HVAC professional, and get help right away!

5. Contaminated Condenser Coils
Condenser coils bear the responsibility of ejecting removed air to the outdoors. Typically, when an AC unit is experiencing malfunctions, this is due to the build-up of dirt and grime. When debris gathers on the condenser coils, this makes it harder for heat to transfer. As a result, your system must work twice as hard, which can lead to system failure.

How a Furnace Operates

A furnace has many components that keep it up and running, but how exactly does it all work together to keep your home warm and cozy? Let’s take a look at how a standard furnace operates to heat your space.

Thermostat & Gas Valve
When you adjust your thermostat up, this triggers the furnace to turn on and warm your home to the desired temperature. First, the gas valve will open and spark the burner located below the combustion chamber. From there, the gas valve will work with your thermostat to manage the gas amount that moves into the furnace.

One of the biggest reasons a furnace isn’t working is due to the pilot light. If you discover that your gas valve works, but the furnace isn’t turning on, make sure your pilot light is on. Your pilot light may need to be relit. In that case, you can use the manufacturer’s instructions to light it yourself or contact an HVAC professional right away.

Heat Exchanger
Once the burner ignites, the flames from it will heat a metal heat exchanger. This heat travels through the heat exchanger’s looped tubes, turning the heat to the air. The heat exchanger is perhaps one of the most critical functions of a furnace. Therefore, if the heat exchanger isn’t working, you won’t get the heat you need to warm your home.

Blower Motor & Fan
When heat travels through the heat exchanger, that’s when the blower motor and fan will push the heat through the plenum and to the ductwork of your home. From there, heat is distributed through several vents in your home until your home is heated to the desired temperature.

How is Furnace Energy Efficiency Measured?
To determine the energy efficiency of your furnace, you must know the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). This ultimately measures the thermal efficiency measure of space-heating furnaces and boilers and will tell you how much fuel is used for heating and the amount that’s lost due to combustion.

If you have a 90% AFUE furnace, this means that approximately 90% of the fuel is used to directly heat your home while the last 10% is lost.

Typically, high-efficiency furnaces AFUE percentage goes above 90% and up to even 98.5%. Medium range efficiency furnaces will be between 80% to 85%. Low-efficiency, and mostly older furnaces vary between 50% to 70%.

The best way to maintain a high-efficiency furnace is to get routine maintenance. The efficiency of your furnace will decline overtime without proper and consistent repair to ductwork leaks, loose and damaged components, clogged air filters, and filthy furnace parts.

Get an HVAC technician to perform annual maintenance to keep your system in pristine condition and highly efficient.
