How a Furnace Operates 

A furnace has many components that keep it up and running, but how exactly does it all work together to keep your home warm and cozy? Let’s take a look at how a standard furnace operates to heat your space.

Thermostat & Gas Valve 
When you adjust your thermostat up, this triggers the furnace to turn on and warm your home to the desired temperature. First, the gas valve will open and spark the burner located below the combustion chamber. From there, the gas valve will work with your thermostat to manage the gas amount that moves into the furnace.

One of the biggest reasons a furnace isn’t working is due to the pilot light. If you discover that your gas valve works, but the furnace isn’t turning on, make sure your pilot light is on. Heat Exchanger

How is Furnace Energy Efficiency Measured?
To determine the energy efficiency of your furnace, you must know the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). This ultimately measures the thermal efficiency measure of space-heating furnaces and boilers and will tell you how much fuel is used for heating and the amount that’s lost due to combustion.

If you have a 90% AFUE furnace, this means that approximately 90% of the fuel is used to directly heat your home while the last 10% is lost.

Typically, high-efficiency furnaces AFUE percentage goes above 90% and up to even 98.5%. Medium range efficiency furnaces will be between 80% to 85%. Low-efficiency, and mostly older furnaces vary between 50% to 70%.
