7 Important Steps of a Furnace Tune-Up

Many significant variables go into a furnace tune-up. Gone are the days of simply taking out the pilot burner and removing the rusty front of the main burners with a wire brush. These days, a thorough heating system tune-up requires an in-depth inspection and procedures to ensure your system performs to the highest standard. Here are 7 important steps of heating system maintenance solutions.

1. Use an Ohmmeter to Perform an Audit of the Igniter

One thing you must do to extend the lifespan of your furnace is to measure the resistance through the igniter. If your furnace comes equipped with a silicon nitride igniter, you should see anywhere from 11 to 17 ohms. However, if the furnace comes equipped with a carbide igniter, you should see 50 to 100 ohms.

Are the readings anywhere outside of these parameters? This means that it may be time to hire a certified technician to replace the ignitor and perform a furnace tune-up. When checking the ignitors, always test the ignitor when it’s cold and the furnace is not on.

2. Clean the Gas Burners

Contaminated and misaligned gas burners are one of the top reasons for system failure. It’s important to inspect your furnace system burners to ensure they are free from debris that may hinder the flow of air or gas. Our professionals offer comprehensive heating tune-up services for homeowners in areas such as Allentown, Haverford, Wilmington, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Trenton. Our team cleans the burners in your furnace to prevent a system failure during the winter season.

Our technicians may use a bristle brush to remove excess soot or rust from your burner’s face. In addition, we may utilize dry nitrogen or air pressure to blow out the burners or burner vestibule in your heating system. However, if your burners are severely rusted, you will need to get a burner replacement.

3. Perform a Combustion Inspection

A combustion analysis is an examination that carefully tests the heat exchanger of your furnace to make sure that it’s working properly. This analysis is the only test that can truly identify safe operations which makes these significant steps to a safe furnace tune-up.

Although most technicians will do a visual inspection, this does not reveal hairline cracks that lead to monoxide leaks in your furnace system. Typically, combustion analysis starts outside the home for proper calibration. From there, when starting the furnace, the technician will measure and record the highest CO level during the first 60 seconds of operation and move further to detect whether to see the CO level of your furnace. If your CO starts to slowly climb during furnace run cycles, this is a sign of a safety issue.

4. Inspect the Heat Exchanger for Deterioration & Damage

Although a complete analysis should be used to detect your furnace system for hairline cracks, a visual inspection should always be a definite part of your tune-up process. Visual inspections, with the use of cameras and dye penetration inspection systems, can inspect the metal flue for holes, and rust to ensure it’s working properly.

5. Inspect the Flame Sensor

Check the multimeter in sequence with the sensor wire and the flame sensor; activate the furnace in a heat cycle. The readings should be anywhere from 1.5 to 4 uA. Please note that it’s to check your system’s manual before testing (some control systems will only need a 0.5 uA). If your sensor tests less than 1uA, or 0.5 uA depending on the system, you’ll start to notice sensing problems with your furnace system, until it fails altogether.

6. Check & Modify the Natural Gas Pressure

To best measure the gas pressure in a furnace, our professionals will clock the meter to make sure that the orifice is the proper size. From there, you can set the correct gas pressure. In their installation manual, furnace manufacturers typically detail a range of 3.2 to 3.8-in. As it usually isn’t very easy to have the proper assortment of burner orifices, you can typically achieve proper combustion for maximum safety and efficiency by adjusting the gas pressure.

7. Perform an Audit for Gas Leaks

Utilize either soap bubbles or an electronic leak detector to check for gas leaks. Please keep in mind that electronic leak detectors will generate a false-positive depending on the pipe brand of pipe dope and soap bubbles.

7 Important Steps of a Heat Pump Tune-Up

The more efficient your heat pump system is, the more money you’ll save on the monthly energy bill. And how might you ensure the performance of your system? By scheduling regular HVAC and heat pump tune ups. Performing a precise inspection at least twice a year (once before the winter and right before the summer) is highly crucial to the condition of your system. Similar to what’s included in an HVAC tune-up, here are seven important steps that must occur during your heat pump tune-up.

1. Swap the Air Filters

Changing or cleaning your air filters is essential during a heat pump tune-up. It’s important to check air filters frequently for built-up dirt and grime to eliminate blockage that might hinder airflow.

If it’s a disposable filter, replacing it at the time your furnace manual says to is the best way to keep your system running smoothly. For washable filters, simply take out the filters, wash them, and place them back.

2. Measure Airflow Levels

To maintain the right balance, a certified technician will need to measure the airflow of your system during a tune-up.

You may not know this, but the way air flows through a heat pump system impacts your monthly energy bill.

The air must flow in the correct amount. If too much air flows, you may experience severe humidity issues with your furnace; if too little, your coils may freeze, affecting how your heat pump performs. Both variables could cause extensive damage to your compressor. That’s why a technician needs to measure the airflow and ensure that it’s working effectively.

3. Analyze Electrical Connections

It is important to inspect all electrical connections in your system to ensure they are working to the best standard. Our team of heating contractors provides reputable heating maintenance services in Allentown, PA, and has the equipment necessary to inspect the electrical connections in your HVAC system.

Faulty electrical connections can be hazardous to the safety and well-being of your furnace system and family. This is why it is important for a certified technician to inspect the wiring and tighten any loose parts that could cause malfunctions.

4. Lubricate Moving Components

Inspect all moving components of your heat pump system, and make sure each part is properly lubricated. Moving heat pump parts rub up against each other, and if not lubricated, could lead to harmful friction inside the motor. This, in turn, can make your heat pump system overwork itself, increasing the monthly energy bill. If you need assistance lubricating the parts in your heat pump, give our team a call to book an appointment. We offer heat pump and furnace services for small to large homes.

5. Inspect the Condensate Drain

Especially when moving to warmer weather, checking the condensate drain is necessary for a quality tune-up inspection. A blocked condensate drain can cause extensive water damage to surrounding objects, affect the humidity levels in your home, and lead to major malfunction within your heat pump.

Ensuring that your drain is clear will allow your system to perform at the highest level, and will mitigate your energy bill.

6. Check the Evaporator & Condenser Coils

Although they seem like small components of your system, the evaporators and condenser coils significantly impact energy costs as well as your system’s efficiency. If your evaporator and condenser coils are dirty, this means your furnace system must overwork itself.

The evaporator and condenser coils must be properly inspected and thoroughly sanitized to ensure the lifespan and efficiency of your heating system.

7. Perform Audit of Thermostat Settings

And of course, you must not forget the thermostat setting. Either you or a technician can set the thermostat to a level that operates efficiently while you’re at home, and will adjust accordingly when out of town to save energy.

Checking the thermostat manual can help you best decide how to set your thermostat to benefit your home and energy bill.
